How to become a Certified Sitecore Developer

Overview

Quick brief: Well, it may not seem as easy as you think (or at least at first). I came from a background of low-level programming in C++ and C. All my previous work were based of off Microsoft DirectShow (you'll find these in the earlier implementations of Skype TX, and Windows Media Player / Classic, VLC Media player, etc).

I worked intensely, straight out of University on video and audio over IP solutions. My first experiences in web development was in PHP (I know, poor me, but a developer of any sorts would have at least experienced PHP once in their lifetime, and thought "nope.").

How?

It isn't that easy to get onboard the Sitecore train - to access the development side, you must be in a company that either uses Sitecore or is in partnership with Sitecore. So this is your biggest hurdle, but once you get over this, it should be straight forward.

Step 1 - Get a Sitecore Developer job.
Step 2 - Work hard and request for training but also be patient. Some companies (like my current one) will provide this on the ready for you, which is an absolute blessing.
Step 3 - Focus, Focus, Focus. Study hard, play around with Sitecore once you get access to it.
Step 4 - Book the exam and do it. This depends on what training modules you took. so be sure to book the right one(s).

Exam structure

  • There are 50 questions
  • You need 80% to pass - so get 40 of those questions right at least.
  • Roughly 50% of the questions are from the training module - so do all of them

What happens after you pass?

You get a shiny certificate like this one

There are a number of exams you can take and this can be found when you log into the WebAssessor portal. I have completed two of the exams on there (and there are a lot of exams!).

The ones to look for as a starter Sitecore Developer are:

  1. Sitecore 9.0 Certified Platform Associate Developer
  2. Sitecore 8.2 Professional Developer
  3. Sitecore Experience Commerce 9.0 Essentials Certification

TL;DR Version

You just read the whole thing right?
  1. Get a Sitecore developer job
  2. Get the training done, and do the exam
  3. Results
